He jumped out of planes in Afghanistan, got paralyzed by a disease most people have never heard of, and walked again. Running for office might genuinely be the least difficult thing he's done.
Alan Buckalew enlisted in the Army at 17, months before 9/11, and did multiple combat tours in Afghanistan as a paratrooper. He earned a Valorous Unit Citation before being medically retired.
He came home, became a DSS caseworker and courtroom advocate for abused kids, graduated valedictorian along the way, and then, mid-grad-school, got hit with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare disorder that left him fully paralyzed for months. He fought his way back and now works as an in-home care aide for elderly and disabled clients.
