Betsy Coffia is an incumbent Democrat running for her third term in the Michigan House of Representatives representing House District 103. A lifelong resident of northern Michigan, Coffia is a social worker and has long been an activist in the community. She was the first Democratic woman in over three decades to be elected to the Grand Traverse County Commission in 2018, and was re-elected as a commissioner in 2020. As a state representative, Coffia has introduced several bills that became law, including laws that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to pre-register to vote; ban childhood marriage; and expand funding to domestic and sexual violence shelters and programs. She has also played a key role in several legislative accomplishments, including the repeal of the so-called “right-to-work” law, expansion of civil rights laws, and free meals for students. ​​Coffia’s priorities include building an economy that works for everyone, preserving Michigan’s natural resources, protecting reproductive rights, expanding access to quality mental and physical healthcare, and fully funding public education. Coffia has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan. Coffia is running against Republican Edwin Dean. Betsy Coffia is the most progressive choice in the race.
