Michigan's Progressive Voter Guide
Dirigido por Justin Mendoza · 5 votantes
Carrie Rheingans is an incumbent Democrat running for her second term in the Michigan House of Representatives for the 47th District. She serves on the Washtenaw County Board of Health, Washtenaw Emergency Medical Services Commission, is vice chair of programming for the Ann Arbor Democratic Club and is a member of the American Federation of Teachers Local 6244.
Carrie Rheingans has built a solidly progressive legislative record. A public health professional by training, she has pushed for universal healthcare in Michigan, cheaper prescription drugs, and harm-reduction policies like syringe access and fentanyl test strips, alongside an enacted law expanding naloxone access. She has voted to expand abortion access, backed LGBTQ+ nondiscrimination protections, and supported sweeping gun-violence prevention measures including expanded background checks and safe storage requirements. Her labor record stands out especially: she voted to repeal Michigan's "Right to Work" law, backed prevailing-wage restoration and collective bargaining rights for grad student researchers, and walked UAW picket lines during strikes. She's also championed rent control enabling legislation, universal free school meals, tuition-free community college, and earned a perfect score from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters for her environmental votes. Several of her bills have become bipartisan law, including protections for students who report sexual assault and the creation of Michigan's first Office of Tribal Legislative Liaison.
Rheingans' priorities span healthcare, the environment, workers, individual rights, and working families. A health policy expert with over two decades of experience, she argues healthcare is a human right and would guarantee coverage to all Michiganders through a universal, Medicare-for-all-style system, lower prescription drug costs, and expand mental health and substance use care. She calls climate change the existential crisis of our time and would protect Michigan's land, air, and water, hold polluters like Gelman Sciences accountable, and make the state a leader in green energy. On the economy, she backs union protections, a living minimum wage, better pay for teachers and nurses, and more trade school and apprenticeship opportunities. She also pledges to protect reproductive freedom, codify privacy rights previously decided by the Supreme Court, shield the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination including gender-affirming care, and ban assault weapons. For working families, she supports universal childcare, paid family and sick leave, subsidized eldercare, affordable housing, and rent control.
Rheingans has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Rheingans is running against Republican Justin Griffis who is endorsed by the right-wing organization Citizens for Traditional Values. Griffis also plans to fight against red flag gun laws and has anti-trans stances.
Carrie Rheingans is the most progressive choice in this race.
