Governor Tony Evers announced he will not seek re-election, opening up a seat in one of the most consequential battleground states in the country for both presidential and Senate races.

The governor plays a critical role in Wisconsin’s redistricting process, with the power to sign or veto maps passed by the state legislature. With the current governorship open and the legislature divided, holding this seat is essential to keeping Republicans from drawing themselves a structural advantage before 2028.

The son of an electrician and a service worker, David Crowley grew up facing housing instability and food insecurity, experiences that still shape how he leads. A former state representative, he now serves his second term as Milwaukee County Executive, the first Black person elected to that office. He is running for Governor on “Badger Basics,” a plan built on affordability, care, and opportunity for working families across Wisconsin.

David Crowley knows public safety starts with public health. That’s why, as Milwaukee County Executive, his administration has made historic investments in mental health, violence prevention, and services to support youth, seniors, and veterans. Crowley’s gun violence prevention investments include: launching the Advance Peace initiative, an evidence-based gun violence prevention program that connects high-risk youth with intensive support and opportunities, investing $80 million in Milwaukee County’s public safety, and securing state funding for new community violence intervention programs. Electing both Crowley and Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski to the governor and lieutenant governor’s offices will ensure that investments in Wisconsin’s public safety will continue.

His father worked as an electrician and his mother worked in the service industry, while both battled addiction and mental health struggles. David never knew if he would come home from school to find his family's belongings on the curb due to another eviction, food in the kitchen, or the heat and lights still on. He learned early that hard work alone isn't always enough. That when systems fail, families feel it first.

His lived experience is not just his backstory.

It is how he governs. He will do whatever it takes to make sure children and families are safe, healthy, and able to thrive. Every child, every resident, every family deserves a Wisconsin full of opportunity.

Because at the end of the day, David Crowley knows what it feels like when the basics are out of reach — and what it looks like when a community finally gets what it needs. That is the governor he will be for every Wisconsinite.
