As a state legislator, she fought to do just that—and secured $250 million for community-based violence prevention in neighborhoods most impacted by gun violence. In Congress, she’s continued to lead on gun safety and cosponsored legislation to expand background checks, ban assault-style weapons, and reduce the flow of illegal guns across state lines.

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez is a progressive Democrat representing IL-3 as the first and only Latina Congresswoman in the Midwest. The daughter of working-class Guatemalan immigrants, Delia Ramirez is an accomplished legislator, social service director, community leader, and coalition builder who has dedicated her life and career advocating for working families.

Rep. Ramirez leads in Congress with the same people-centered values that she brought during her leadership as an Illinois State Representative. In her first two terms, she has passed legislation with bipartisan support to help student veterans, is co-leading the Dream and Promise Act, and introduced legislation that gives tenants the right to organize. Rep. Ramirez was also one of the original co-sponsors of the Ceasefire Resolution introduced in October 2023, and is the lead sponsor of the historic Block the Bombs Act aimed at blocking bombs to Israel and holding the Netanyahu and Trump administrations accountable to US and international law.

She currently sits on the Committee on Homeland Security and the Veteran Affairs Committee where she serves as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

Congresswoman Delia Ramirez wants to fight for a new foreign policy. She is ready to see money go to people over the Pentagon. She will push for the prioritization of human rights, refocus on diplomacy, and Congressional accountability when it comes to international relations. We must recognize that unquestioned defense budget increases come at the expense of working families, where Republicans question where every penny and dime of domestic spending for our social safety net goes.”

The daughter of Guatemalan immigrants, Delia Ramirez’s focus on bold, transformative solutions to homelessness and poverty is inspired by her childhood experience volunteering at a soup kitchen. As a nonprofit executive, community organizer, and Illinois state legislator, she has consistently prioritized housing insecurity. Delia Ramirez passed the COVID-19 Emergency Housing Act to protect renters from eviction and homeowners from foreclosure, and secured funding for a tenant and landlord pandemic relief fund.
