Jaime Churches is a Democrat running for her second term to the Michigan House of Representatives for the 27th District. Churches, the daughter of a nurse and businessman, is a longtime resident of Downriver and was a 5th grade teacher for 10 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in integrated science and elementary education and a master’s degree in educational leadership. Her passion for serving her community and experience as an educator are why she decided to run for office.
During her first term Churches secured funding for several Downriver infrastructure projects, including $20 million for Grosse Ile Free Bridge repairs, $20 million for a Trenton railroad crossing, $10 million each for the Downriver Career Tech Consortium and Utility Wastewater Authority, and $400,000 for Gibraltar's lead line replacements. Legislatively, she helped pass the Clean Energy and Jobs Act, reinstate prevailing wages, repeal the senior pension tax, expand the working families tax credit, add LGBTQ+ protections to the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, repeal the 1931 abortion ban, strengthen firearm background checks and safe storage requirements, and end mandatory retention for Michigan third graders.
Churches' priorities center on education funding and support for teachers, drawing on her own experience as a Downriver 5th-grade teacher who spent personal money to make up for underfunded classrooms, and her push for a culture where educators feel valued rather than strained. More broadly, she frames her agenda around working families, arguing that legislation affecting businesses, classrooms, health systems, and the environment should ensure everyday families get the support and opportunities they need to get ahead, and that politics and policy should be made more accessible to them.
Churches has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Detroit Action, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, Clean Water Action, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Churches is running against Republican incumbent Rylee Linting who is endorsed by the anti-choice organization Right to Life Michigan and the right-wing organization Citizens for Traditional Values.
Jaime Churches is the most progressive choice in this race.

Jaime Churches is a States Win alumna, teacher, and union vice president running to reclaim her House seat and help flip the Michigan House. Jaime has seen firsthand how underinvestment in public education, small businesses, and working families has led to hardships and inequity for Downriver families. While in the legislature, she was a leader in passing bills that required background checks for firearm purchases, streamlined the process of allowing public school employees to unionize, and required funding to make transportation safer. Jaime’s opponent has aligned herself with conservative group Turning Point USA and decried the so-called “woke culture.” Sending Jaime back to the legislature will help flip the Michigan House and win a Democratic trifecta in Michigan.
