Before being elected to the state legislature, Senator Valdez was the first president of his union, AFSCME Council 2, Local 21-C. He has been a consistent champion of policies that boost unions and protect workers, and address rising costs, including supporting the Millionaire’s tax and co-sponsoring our WA Science Research Bill (SB 6321). Last session, Senator Valdez sponsored and passed a bill to ban face coverings for law enforcement to address the terror of ICE agents in our state. Rep. Javier Valdez is running for the 46th Legislative District Senate seat. Valdez was appointed to the state House in 2017 and was re-elected in 2018 and 2020. He also served as the first president of the Washington State Council of County and City Employees (AFSCME Council 2). In Olympia, Valdeez has worked to find equitable, progressive solutions to problems facing residents in his district. He supported legislation to prevent discrimination based on citizenship or immigration status, and advocated for requiring the state to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In previous years, Valdez sponsored several successful bills to protect our communities, including as the prime sponsor of the law to restrict ghost guns. He also sought to provide safe places for civic discourse by banning guns in settings like school board meetings and supported establishing a statewide alert system for missing Indigenous people. He has supported legislation to expand affordable housing and strengthen tenant protections, including missing middle housing and rent stabilization. Valdez previously sponsored a wealth tax, which aimed to finally make extraordinarily wealthy Washingtonians pay what they owe in taxes to help fund education, transportation, and more. He was also a co-sponsor of the historic Millionaires Tax, which will help the state provide free school lunches and expand eligibility to the Working Families Tax Credit. Valdez was also the sponsor of the Senate bill to prohibit local, state, and federal law enforcement from wearing face coverings. This bill was a key protection for our immigrant communities as federal overreach continues to target undocumented immigrants nationwide.
