Jay Edwards first ran for public office in 2016, becoming a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, representing Athens, Meigs, Washington, Vinton, and Morgan counties. Edwards served four terms in the Ohio House of Representatives before he was term limited at the end of the 135th General Assembly. During his time in the legislature, Edwards served as Chairman of the House Finance Committee, where he successfully fought for a billion dollar increase in public education funding and helped secure nearly $400 million for higher education capital projects. An advocate for public education, educators, students, labor, and rural communities, Edwards had a strong voting record on OEA’s key issues, including public education funding, voucher accountability, standardized testing, teacher pay, school breakfast and lunch, and collective bargaining. Edwards received the OEA Legislative Champion of Public Education award at the 2025 Spring Representative Assembly.
