Jim Haadsma is a Democrat running for his fourth term in the Michigan House of Representatives for the 44th District. Haadsma recently held this seat from 2019 to 2024 and only lost in 2024 by 79 votes. He has been a lawyer for 38 years specializing in labor relations and workers’ compensation. Prior to running for office, Jim served as a member of the Calhoun County Board for four terms. He has also served as a board member for the Art Center of Battle Creek, the Southern Michigan Urban League, the Kiwanis Club of Battle Creek as president, and Battle Creek Pride.
While serving in the Michigan House Jim has fought for jobs, economic equality, and improved healthcare, including reproductive rights, all while working with state and local agencies to address fundamental infrastructure needs.
Haadsma’s platform is built around three main priorities; healthcare, the economy, and education. On healthcare, he draws on his background as a disability lawyer to advocate for expanded Medicaid coverage and push for quality care that isn’t out of reach due to high deductibles or copays. On the economy, he brings his experience as both a lawyer and small business owner to advocate for workers’ rights, job creation, and support for residents dealing with issues like unemployment compensation. On education, he’s focused on strengthening public schools through adequate funding, competitive teacher pay, and closing learning gaps left by the pandemic, while also working to make college more affordable and reduce student debt.
Haadsma has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Haadsma is running against Republican Steve Frisbie who is endorsed by the anti-reproductive freedom organization Right to Life Michigan and the right-wing organization Citizens for Traditional Values.
Jim Haadsma is the most progressive choice in this race.
