Jimmie Wilson Jr. is an incumbent Democrat running for his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 32nd District. Wilson grew up on Ypsilanti's south side and in the West Willow neighborhood, graduating from Belleville High School before becoming a licensed aircraft mechanic and later a journeyman electrician at Ford's Rawsonville Plant, where he joined UAW Local 898. His path into public service began with his election as UAW Local 898 Trustee in 2014, leading to his 2016 election to the Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees, where he was re-elected in 2020.
During his time as State Representative, Wilson helped eliminate school debt for Ypsilanti Community Schools and Willow Run, which led to lower property taxes for homeowners in those districts. He also worked to improve public defender pay, helped enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution, repealed Michigan's right-to-work law, and pushed for a more compassionate criminal justice system, particularly for children. On top of that, he brought $100 million in projects to the district, sponsored roughly 25 bills, cosponsored nearly 700 more, and maintained a 100% attendance record throughout his time in Lansing.
Wilson's priorities span a wide range of issues, starting with expanding affordable housing and homeownership opportunities and increasing K-12 and higher education funding while paying teachers and staff fairly. He supports expanding access to healthcare and mental healthcare, including enshrining reproductive care coverage and lowering prescription drug costs, alongside criminal justice reforms that emphasize accountability, gun safety measures, and more compassionate treatment of youth. His platform also includes environmental justice priorities like clean water and lead pipe removal, pro-union policies such as raising the minimum wage and repealing right-to-work, and civil rights protections covering reproductive freedom, voting rights, racial justice, and LGBTQIA+ equality. Rounding out his platform is a focus on economic development, including support for small businesses and attracting good-paying union jobs to the district.
Wilson Jr. has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, Clean Water Action, and and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Wilson Jr. is running against Republican Mike Eller who is endorsed by the right-wing organization Citizens for Traditional Values.
Jimmie Wilson Jr. is the most progressive choice in this race.
