Joey Andrews is an incumbent Democrat running for his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 38th District. Andrews was born and raised in the district and only left briefly to attend college which ended with him earning a J.D. from Wayne State University. After graduation he returned to St. Joseph and started a small solar panel installation company. In 2020 Andrews took a position with the Michigan AFL-CIO, first as its West Michigan regional field director and then as a policy analyst. During his time in office, Andrews has focused much of his legislative work on infrastructure and housing: he supported a nine-bill road funding package (House Bills 4180-87 and HB 4230) that provided $3.1 billion for infrastructure across the state. More recently, he's been involved in housing policy, joining the governor for the signing of legislation creating the Michigan Housing Opportunity Tax Credit, cutting red tape for new home construction, and limiting institutional investors from owning more than 100 single-family homes. He's also worked on justice-related fixes, backing House Bill 5431 to close loopholes in the Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act. Andrews' priorities center on putting working families first, supporting worker protections, organizing rights, and pro-growth economic development for Southwest Michigan. He also focuses on quality education, including higher teacher pay, expanding free community college through Michigan Reconnect, and ensuring K-12 funds are protected from being redirected elsewhere. On affordability, he backs cutting red tape to build more housing, expanding homebuyer programs, and hardening the power grid to control energy costs. His platform also includes strengthening healthcare access through backfilling Medicaid, funding free primary care, and mandating safe nurse staffing ratios, along with support for families through expanded Rx Kids funding, paid family leave, and universal pre-K. Andrews has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan. Andrews is running against Republican Mark Krieger Joey Andrews is the most progressive choice in this race.
