Karla Hult has built her career on listening to people, uplifting voices and shining a light on her community. As an award-winning journalist, she has covered international, political and cultural issues in newsrooms throughout the country. Perhaps her most meaningful work is also deeply personal: Karla documented her family’s journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
A proud Minnesotan, Karla is a graduate of St. Olaf College, where she also often serves as an adjunct professor. She later continued her studies at Columbia University where she earned a Master’s in International Affairs, focusing on economic and political development. These experiences shaped her commitment to ethical leadership, public service and community-centered solutions.
Karla has long served as an advocate and supporter of community organizations, including those that walk alongside people experiencing displacement – Alight and People Serving People – and organizations supporting families affected by Alzheimer’s and other causes of dementia, including the Alzheimer’s Association. In 2021, Karla also founded So Many Goodbyes, a mission dedicated to supporting families and caregivers while also educating the greater community about this health care crisis. She is a host of the “Hello Alzheimer’s” podcast. In 2026, Karla transitioned from journalism to focus fully on advocacy and public service. Among Karla’s mission-driven priorities is her commitment to fiercely protect women’s rights and freedoms.
Karla lives in Edina with her family and is running to serve as the Minnesota State Senator for Senate District 50.
