Kevin Hertel is running for his second term in the Michigan State Senate. Hertel has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Michigan State University and while in college, co-created a coalition of Michigan’s 15 public universities to advocate for lower-cost higher education. He is a member of the St. Clair Shores Waterfront Environmental Committee and volunteers with the Macomb County Special Olympics.

Hertel’s main priorities are to ensure infrastructure is up to code to keep the environment protected, increase access to early education, and lower the cost of public universities and community colleges through government funding. He also wants to improve programs for mental health care, substance abuse programs and programs for youth offenders to decrease prison sizes, abolish the retirement tax on our seniors, and improve the roads.

Hertel has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, and meets criteria for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, the Committee to Protect Health Care, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.

Hertel’s opponent in this race is Republican John Goldwater who holds strong anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-reproductive rights views. Goldwater is also backed by the DeVos family who wants to privatize Michigan schools.
