Dr. Matt Longjohn is an incumbent Democrat running for his third term in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 40th District. He is a medical doctor and for 25 years he has led non-profit organizations to integrate community resources into equitable, effective, and sustained population health initiatives. Notably, he was identified by the Obama Administration as one of the top 100 health innovators in the country. His previous roles include National Health Officer and Vice President for Community Integrated Health at YMCA of the USA.
Longjohn's legislative work has focused heavily on healthcare policy, an area shaped by his background as a physician. Early in his term, he received a high-profile appointment to the Select Committee to Protect Michigan Employees and Small Businesses. He's also been outspoken on the cost of care, appearing alongside colleagues at a press conference to spotlight joint efforts to bring down prescription drug prices for Michigan residents. On medical debt, he's supported legislative action as the topic has come before lawmakers, including bills addressing hospital financial assistance programs and medical debt collection practices.
Longjohn's priorities center on reducing healthcare and prescription drug costs, strengthening primary care access, and defending Medicaid from federal cuts, drawing on his 25 years of experience as a physician. He also focuses on preventive health services like breast cancer screening and immunization education, along with stabilizing and diversifying the state's healthcare workforce. His platform includes investing in accessible, lifelong public education and ensuring clean air and water for Michigan families. He's also committed to protecting the safety net families rely on for food, housing, transportation, and utilities.
Longjohn has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Longjohn is running against Republican Robert Sitarski who has not updated his campaign website or social media with any policy positions, however on his personal facebook he has pushed conspiracy theories about the 2020 election.
Dr. Matt Longjohn is the most progressive choice in this race.
