State Senator Michelle Hinchey is seeking reelection to her Hudson Valley seat just north of Poughkeepsie. First elected in 2020, Hinchey currently chairs the Agriculture Committee, where she brings a savvy understanding of the tensions between preservation of New York’s farmland and natural resources with the imperatives to advance new technologies and infrastructure. She is a strong proponent of the CLCPA, New York’s 2019 bill to reduce emissions, and she is a leading advocate for expanding solar development on brownfields. (However, she calls herself “unsure” about new nuclear power.) As a site of population growth from New York City, especially in the wake of the Covid pandemic, Hinchey is proactive about addressing the pressures from increased demand that have raised local housing costs by 80%. Her Upstate Housing agenda includes thoughtful efforts like the Small Rental Development Initiative and ADU legalization to unlock new homes across the district.
