Voters will elect two members to the University of Michigan Board of Regents this November, and we recommend Democratic candidates Paul Brown and Amir Makled as the most progressive candidates in this race.
Paul Brown is running for re-election. He was first elected to the board in 2018. Brown is a proud progressive democrat who was born and raised in northern Michigan in a union household. He earned a B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Michigan and a J.D. from Wayne State University. Brown began his career as an attorney and law clerk to Federal Judge John O'Meara, then joined the Granholm administration as Vice President of Capital Markets at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, focusing on expanding capital access for small businesses. He was later appointed by President Biden to the U.S. Treasury's Small Business Administration Lending Advisory Council. Brown remains active in Michigan’s civic and philanthropic communities. He has served on the boards of several nonprofit organizations focused on education, history, youth programs, and economic development, including the League of Conservation Voters, the Michigan History Foundation, the Youth Foundation of America, and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan New Economy Initiative advisory board.
Amir Makled is running for University of Michigan Regent. He received his BBA in Finance from the University of Michigan - Dearborn and a J.D. from Wayne State University School of Law and now practices as a civil rights attorney and is a partner at Hall Makled Law Firm, located in Dearborn Michigan.
Makled’s campaign is focused on affordability, access, free speech, transparency, and workers' rights. He wants to make the university more affordable and accessible across all three campuses, protect free speech and academic freedom for students and faculty, push for more transparent and ethical governance, and ensure fair treatment for faculty, staff, and healthcare workers.
Paul Brown and Amir Makled have been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan Education Association, Michigan AFL-CIO. They are also endorsed by the Michigan Democratic Party. Brown has also been endorsed by Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
The two Republican choices for this race are Lena Epstein and Michael Schostak. Epstein co-chaired President Donald Trump’s 2016 Michigan campaign. She intends to prioritize protecting conservative speech on campus and holding leftist professors and administrators accountable.
Paul Brown and Amir Makled are the most progressive choices in this race.
