Our Revolution is proud to endorse Rashida Tlaib for re-election to Congress in Michigan’s 7th District because she has never stopped advocating for working people, challenging corporate power, and standing up for communities too often ignored by Washington. From her first day in Congress, Rashida has refused to back down from the toughest fights.

Rashida Tlaib is the eldest of 14 children. where she learned the importance of hard work, honesty and commitment to community. Being big sister to 13 siblings helped her develop leadership qualities that make her responsible, caring and compassionate, and her family’s struggle to create a new life in Detroit inspired Rashida’s long-term commitment to public service and giving back to the community, one she shares today with her two sons, Adam and Yousif. With the belief that history is everyone’s story, not just that of the wealthy and privileged, Rashida Tlaib dedicates her life to ensure that the voice and concern of every person is heard and addressed. With her commitment and uncompromising principle to advocate for social justice, despite the risks it poses, Rashida continues to rewrite and make history. Rashida is a longtime resident of Detroit and the child of Palestinian immigrants. Rashida served as a State Representative in the Michigan House of Representatives, where she served three terms. Rashida made history by becoming the first female Muslim elected to the Michigan Legislature and only second Muslim woman to serve in a state legislature in the country. Rashida received her Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1998 and Jurist Doctorate from Thomas Cooley Law School. In 2015, Rashida joined the Sugar Law Center for Economic & Social Justice, a national advocacy organization fighting for human rights on behalf of working families. Although all her advocacy work is significant, Rashida's most important accomplishment was establishing a neighborhood service center which provided more than twelve different programs to low-income families and those who need help the most. The neighborhood service center lives on as the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy and continues to serve thousands of the families she represented. Rashida has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being featured in PBS’ Makers Documentary on Women in Politics, Family Circle magazine’s 20 Most Influential Moms of 2016, and in New York Magazine’s list of Democratic leaders as the “next Obama.”

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib is a steadfast defender of peace and justice. “My residents sent me to Washington to be a fierce defender of their priorities and fight to enact policies that would make a meaningful difference in their lives. This bill does not meet that standard and is a $768-billion missed opportunity to address my residents’ priorities. I support—and have since my first day in office—the long-overdue dismantling of our country’s military-industrial complex so that we can finally put a stop to forever wars and reinvest into providing our communities with the resources they need and deserve.”

AAPAC also endorsed Palestinian American U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib for a fourth two-year term, praising her progressive legislative record of defending workers’ rights, social justice and immigrant rights, advocating for peace and investing in families rather than financing foreign wars.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib is a staunch progressive and longtime community activist and attorney who is running for her fifth term in the U.S. House to represent Michigan’s 12th Congressional District. She is a proud daughter of immigrants and one of the first two Muslim women to serve in Congress.

Rep. Tlaib’s priorities in Congress include fighting for racial, gender, and LGBTQ+ equality, combating the climate crisis and working toward environmental justice, and ensuring everyone has access to healthcare and housing. She has secured $68 million in federal funding for over 55 community projects and has returned more than $12.6 million back to district residents in the form of Social Security and disability benefits, veteran benefits, debt reduction, tax returns, securing back pay, and helping people navigate government services. She has three neighborhood service centers throughout her district that have resolved nearly 13,000 constituent cases.

Rep. Tlaib’s opponent in this race is Republican James Hooper who is staunchly anti-abortion and has pushed election conspiracy theories.
