Lieber is the current Chair of the BOE and a proven tax policy leader – her years in the Assembly give her the deep legislative experience this office requires. She brings that expertise with a clear commitment to ensuring vulnerable communities understand their rights as taxpayers and can access the tax benefits and credits they are entitled to. That combination of technical command and equity focus is exactly what we look for, and we are eager to see Lieber protect the economic interests of Californian women and families.

The State Board of Equalization no longer has any significant functions and is a waste of taxpayer money. Yet it exists. Lieber is the incumbent. Pimentel touts his desire to change tax law, e.g., he wants no sales tax on food, but this Board has no such power. I'll vote for Lieber, who advocates "transparency and accountability," but this office should be eliminated.

Sally Lieber
A lot of Sacramento insiders and policy types want to get rid of this board, and there’s no question it’s been a placeholder for marginally qualified people who want to get to statewide office. But we’re not sure it should be abolished: The board has, in the past, with members like the late Bill Bennett, been a check on private utilities like PG&E and an oversight board for local assessors. It’s not a huge expense, and could play a role in creating a statewide public-power system. Sally Lieber sees the benefits in the agency, and as a candidate with a working-class background, she fits the role. We’re happy to back her.

According to GrowSF, this position barely has any power. Incumbent Sally Lieber is the only candidate that’s raised any money and will win reelection regardless.

Re-elect Sally Lieber to the Board of Equalization to keep California on the right track for progress. Sally Lieber has served on the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) since 2023, when she was elected with 70% of the vote. As a member of the board, she has prioritized transparency and accountability, affordable housing, environmental protection, and veterans’ and homeowners’ services. In 2024, Lieber ran an unsuccessful campaign for Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors but was able to retain her BOE seat. She previously served in the California State Assembly, where she championed educational and economic opportunities, environmental protections, and protecting victims and survivors of crime. Lieber has the endorsement of several groups, including Sierra Club, Equality California, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, California Working Families Party, California Teachers Association, and other labor unions and Democratic Clubs. She also has the support of many elected leaders, such as State Controller Malia Cohen, Attorney General Rob Bonta, Rep. Lateefah Simon, Rep. Ro Khanna, San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu, and Santa Clara County Supervisor Betty Duong.

overseeing tax collections is an important down ballot job. Lieber supports protections for low income homeowners and veterans needing exemptions among other issues.

The state Board of Equalization collects tax, and is the only publicly-elected tax commission in the United States. The Board of Equalization can hold corporations accountable by ensuring they pay their taxes; since Lieber came on, the Board has also made a major commitment to rigorously examine the programs and mechanisms that help fund affordable housing.
The League endorsed Sally Lieber twice in June 2022 (https://www.theleaguesf.org/June_2022#BoardEqualization) and November 2022 (https://www.theleaguesf.org/Nov_2022#BoardEqualization), praising her competence and progressive record in Sacramento. Now she’s the incumbent, and doing a great job. Lieber is running a corporate-free campaign against Republican Bill Shireman, “a fiscal conservative with a conscience,” and John Pimentel, a kinda tired centrist Democrat endorsed by a slew of tired centrist Democrats. Lieber is endorsed by progressives like Lateefah Simon, Alex Lee, and Ro Khanna; SEIU California, the National Union of Healthcare Workers, and the California Teachers Association—as well as by the California Democratic Party and even the reprehensible billionaire troll farm GrowSF. Clearly everyone can see that Lieber knows what she’s doing.
Vote Sally Lieber for Board of Equalization!
