Samantha Steckloff is an incumbent Democrat seeking re-election for her fourth term in the Michigan House of Representatives. After high school, while obtaining her degree from Purdue University in political science, Steckloff served as the youngest city youth advisor in the country. Later, she was elected to the Farmington Hills City Council twice, where she promoted sustainable building practices in the city, created the Community Health Commission, and expanded recycling programs.
During Steckloff’s tenure she has helped pass the CROWN Act and the Michigan Reconnect scholarship program, has been involved in negotiating state budgets focused on health care, housing, childcare, and education, and co-sponsored legislation to protect Michigan’s history and cultural institutions. Drawing on her own experience fighting breast cancer at 31, she has pushed for a public health insurance option, protections for preexisting conditions, and expanded coverage for essential benefits, while also advocating for trade schools and apprenticeships alongside traditional higher education, and for civil rights and equality more broadly. She holds an 84% environmental voting record score from the Michigan League of Conservation Voters and was named a “Legislator of the Year” by the Michigan Municipal League in March 2026 for her work supporting local governments.
Steckloff’s campaign is focused on four core priorities. On health care, she supports a public insurance option that is affordable and comprehensive, protections for preexisting conditions, guaranteed coverage for essential benefits like emergency services, maternity care, and mental health treatment, and reduced medical debt for patients and providers. On the environment, she calls climate change an urgent, turning-point issue, opposing rollbacks of air and water regulations and pushing for decisive action to preserve resources for future generations. On education, she emphasizes continuous investment in schools, students, and educators, while also promoting trade schools, apprenticeships, and other specialized training as equally valid paths to opportunity alongside traditional college. On equality, she frames diversity as one of Michigan's strengths and describes her role as promoting justice and breaking down barriers for women, racial and religious minorities, and LGBTQ residents, who she says too often face prejudice and harassment.
Steckloff has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Steckloff is running against Republican Kevin Hammer.
Samantha Steckhoff is the best choice in this race.
