Sarah Pounds is a Democrat running for her first term in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 54th District. Pounds is a lifelong Oakland County resident and for years she has worked to solve problems in her community by serving on Oakland County housing and community development boards. Pounds' priorities begin with making life more affordable, lowering costs for utilities, healthcare, childcare, and groceries while holding corporations and utilities accountable for unfair price increases. She wants public schools fully and predictably funded, with stronger educator recruitment, expanded career and technical education, and less reliance on standardized testing. On housing, she would expand options for families, seniors, and young people through strategic development and brownfield redevelopment. Her economic agenda backs unions, prevailing wage, and apprenticeships, and looks to protect workers as automation and AI reshape workplaces. She also calls for holding polluters accountable, addressing PFAS and aging water infrastructure, and requiring strong safeguards for data centers. On healthcare, she would expand affordable coverage, lower drug costs, support reproductive freedom, and strengthen mental health services. Pounds has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Equality Michigan Action Network, Michigan AFL-CIO, Sierra Club - Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan. Pounds is running against Republican Roman Gaskey who is endorsed by the anti-reproductive freedom organization Right to Life Michigan and the right-wing organization Citizens for Traditional Values. Sarah Pounds is the most progressive choice in this race.
