Voters will elect two members to the Wayne State University Board of Governors this November, and we recommend Democratic candidates Richard Mack and Shereef Akeel as the most progressive candidates in this race.
Richard Mack is running for the Wayne State University Board of Governors. He received a dual B.A. from University of Michigan in Economics and Political Science and a J.D. from Wayne State University Law School. He currently works as a union-side labor and civil rights attorney and has negotiated several dozen labor contracts for unions, with universities and other public employers across the state; including for a 27-union coalition during the Detroit bankruptcy. Mack plans to use his experience of wading through government budgets to help deliver a top-notch education for students, while fairly compensating the faculty and staff who make that education possible. He is also passionate about protecting the free speech rights of all on campus, and protecting academic freedoms against illegal interference from the outside and wants to help make WSU more affordable, safe, and connected to the entire state of Michigan.
Shereef Akeel is running for the Wayne State University Board of Governors. His family moved from California to Michigan when he was ten and he is a proud product of Michigan public schools. He obtained a B.A. from the University of Michigan, M.B.A from Wayne State University, and J.D. from Michigan State University, Detroit College of Law. His impressive law career as a civil rights and employment attorney has led to him being recognized as one of Forbes top 200 lawyers in America in 2024. He is currently a partner at Akeel and Valentine, PLC. Akeel's priorities focus on making college more affordable through lower tuition, expanded financial aid, and cheaper course materials; strengthening academics via faculty retention, Detroit industry partnerships, and STEM/research investment; supporting students with better mental health services, retention programs, and grad student benefits; advancing diversity through equity-focused safety policies and diverse leadership representation; and improving governance through greater transparency and accountability in university spending and decisions.
Richard Mack and Akeel Shereef have been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan Education Association, Michigan AFL-CIO. They are also endorsed by the Michigan Democratic Party.
The two Republican choices for this race are Andy Anuzis and Christa Murphy. Anuzis previously served as senior policy advisor for Mike Rogers in 2011.
