Justice Theo Angelis is running for Washington State Supreme Court Position 5. He was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court by Governor Bob Ferguson in 2026 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Barbara Madsen. Before joining the court, Angelis spent more than 25 years as an appellate attorney and partner at K&L Gates, where he led the firm’s appellate practice and later its global intellectual property practice. Throughout his career, Angelis has argued cases in state and federal courts involving constitutional law, intellectual property, tribal law, government liability, and civil litigation. In addition to his legal practice, he has done extensive pro bono work representing refugees, asylum seekers, and children in immigration proceedings, including efforts challenging the federal government’s practice of requiring unrepresented children to appear alone in immigration court. His work has been recognized by organizations including the ACLU, the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, and Kids in Need of Defense. Angelis is the first Justice of Middle Eastern descent to serve on the Washington State Supreme Court and previously served as President of the Middle Eastern Legal Association of Washington (MELAW). His campaign emphasizes faithfully interpreting and applying the Washington State Constitution and laws, protecting judicial independence and impartial decision-making, expanding access to justice through open and accessible courts, and ensuring consistent application of the law across Washington’s court system. He describes the court’s role as requiring careful, impartial decision-making to maintain public confidence in the judiciary. We recommend Theo Angelis for State Supreme Court Position 5.

Justice Theodore Angelis was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court this year, and is running to retain his seat. He brings decades of experience as an appellate advocate, legal scholar, and public interest lawyer, and has been recognized across the legal community for his rigorous legal analysis and commitment to justice. Among his pro bono work, he has represented asylum seekers and children in need, and been recognized for that work by the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and the ACLU, among others. The son and grandson of immigrants and refugees, he brings a deeply personal understanding of the importance of a legal system that protects opportunity, fairness, and equal treatment under the law. He has earned AFT Washington’s endorsement for his commitment to the rights of ordinary Washingtonians, and we believe that his expertise is essential on Washington State’s Supreme Court in Position 5 as we navigate the complicated legal terrain of the current moment. Theo Angelis is a recent appointment to the court, but has decades of experience constitutional law, intellectual property, tribal law, government liability, and civil litigation. He also has an extensive record of pro bono work representing refugees, asylum seekers, and children in immigration proceedings and has been recognized by the ACLU and Northwest Immigrant Rights Project. He is endorsed by orgs like the Sierra Club, the Stranger and Planned Parenthood.
Dave Larson is extremely conservative and has already run 3 times to be on the Supreme Court. He has been very public about his belief that the U.S. Supreme Court should not have protected same-sex marriage, expressed that God is the highest source of authority above government institutions, and affirmed that Judeo-Christian values are central to good government. In the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v. Wade he also made it clear he would not support the protection of reproductive rights should it come before the court.

Washington State has several State Supreme Court races this year, which is the body that interprets the state constitution and laws. The next State Supreme Court will likely take up the issue of the Millionaire’s Tax and immigrant rights, among other critical issues, which is why the mega-wealthy are running their own WA Supreme Court candidates to overturn progressive victories. Our endorsements represent a slate of candidates that have experience defending working people, immigrants, reproductive and gender affirming care, and are committed to expanding access to justice. This August, vote: Colleen Melody (Position 1), Jaime Hawk (Position 3), Theo Angelis (Position 5), and Debra Stephens (Position 7) to defend and expand our rights in these areas!
