Tonya Myers Phillips is the incumbent Democrat running for re-election for her second term in the Michigan House of Representatives in the 7th district. She was born and raised in Detroit and is an attorney and community leader with a lifelong history of service and advocacy under her belt. She studied political science and went on to receive her law degree from the University of Michigan.
Myers Phillips has worked in private practice to represent small businesses and churches, and served as a criminal defense attorney. She has also worked for Michigan Legal Services as a housing attorney, helping vulnerable persons save their homes from foreclosure, and in 2015 she championed Detroit’s first jail diversion program to coordinate community service and wraparound services in place of jail or high fines. She has served on numerous community advocacy campaigns and in 2022 received the Spirit of Detroit award for advocacy for equitable laws and systems for Detroiters.
Myers Phillips priorities include expanding economic security through paid sick leave, child care assistance, unemployment reform, and protections against foreclosure and eviction, along with affordability plans for water and utilities. She also pushes for equitable economic development that ties public funding to community benefits, protection of school and library funding, safe and affordable housing, clean air and water, and a fairer justice system with expanded legal representation and alternatives to incarceration for low-income residents.
Myers Phillips has been endorsed by the following progressive partner organizations: American Federation of Teachers - Michigan, Michigan AFL-CIO, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan United Action, Detroit Action, Michigan Association for Justice, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, and Service Employees International Union - Michigan.
Myers Phillips is running against Republican Reginald Moorer who has expressed pro-hitler/anti-semitic sentiments on social media.
Myers Phillips is the most progressive choice in this race.
