A State Senator doesn't represent the entire state. They represent their district—but they vote on laws that affect the entire state.
What does a State Senator actually do?
A State Senator can:
Introduce and vote on state legislation.
Vote on the state budget and appropriations.
Work on laws involving education, healthcare, public safety, transportation, taxes, economic development, housing and other state responsibilities.
Serve on legislative committees where bills are examined and amended.
Represent the interests of people living in their district in Raleigh.
District 19 matters because representation is geographic. Don't assume based on your city, ZIP code, or the district you were in previously. North Carolina's legislative district boundaries can change. The State Board of Elections provides current Senate district maps and geographic files.
