Zach Abbott is a Democrat running for her first term as representative for House District 80.

Abbott has lived in the Caledonia/Gaines Township area for almost his entire life. The one exception was when he served in the Air Force as a weather forecaster. A Calvin University graduate, Abbott has also worked at The Right Place, a Grand Rapids-based economic development organization.

Abbott’s priorities include addressing the cost-of-living crisis; building more affordable housing; investing in education, infrastructure, and transit; and expanding access to healthcare.

Abbott is running against MAGA Republican incumbent Angela Rigas. Rigas espouses right-wing views on many issues and has developed a conservative voting record in the legislature, including opposing bills that have expanded the rights of workers, women, and voters. She was one of just five lawmakers to vote against bipartisan bills to ban child marriage. She has also been endorsed by Right to Life of Michigan, an anti-choice organization. She appeared at the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
