13% of Caltrain riders bring an (e)bike or electric scooter on the train to make their first and last legs of their commute possible, but at the rapidly-growing 22nd Street station, this is very difficult to do.
22nd Street station is the only Bay Area train station that requires climbing stairs to access, despite having 1,600 daily users. While ebikes make bike + train commutes accessible to many more people, carrying heavy bikes up the stairs is a major nuisance, and potentially dangerous. Caltrain hopes to add ramps to the station--a great solution, but also expensive ($20m), and slow to build (at least 2.5 years, after funding is found). Little progress has been made since 2023.
Wheelchair access remains a challenge, but a bike runnel would provide an affordable and simple to install solution for rolling bikes up the existing staircase. Runnels are available premade from multiple manufactures, and simply need to be bolted on to an existing staircase. Multiple BART stations have already done this!
