We recommend ranking Alexandra Williams #1, LeAna Powell #2, and leaving the #3 spot blank.
Alexandra Williams is a math teacher who saw that OUSD’s “math is not mathing.” She has 18+ years of K–12 teaching and administration experience and is a PhD candidate in Organizational Development & Leadership. She brings extraordinary depth of hands-on experience, including teaching high-need students in court-ordered probation programs, serving in a leadership role as an assistant principal, directing regional STEM non-profits, and working inside district-run public, charter, and specialized alternative schools.
She is clear-eyed about the board’s responsibilities, saying “adult behavior must change for student outcomes to improve.” She shows exceptional poise, maturity, and clarity in keeping student safety and academic growth at the center of every decision – all things that are lacking in the board majority today.
LeAna Powell is a strong second choice. She’s an OUSD parent with two children in the district, serves on the PTO, and has already used official channels to demand transparency when the district fell short. Her priorities are open and transparent district finances, student safety, and real support for students with disabilities.
Williams and Powell are running against the current board vice president Valarie Bachelor, who has voted with the board’s majority on every decision that brought OUSD to its current crisis, and is chronically unresponsive to her constituents.
You might hear:
“Alexandra Williams supports and currently works at a charter school.”
Williams brings vast experience having worked at both district-run schools and charters. Her knowledge of what governance looks like in both environments is a reason to support her, not disqualify her.
In any case, no charter schools have opened in Oakland since 2018 and charter enrollment is consistently declining. The board has far greater challenges ahead, starting with whether it can put the district on a path towards fiscal solvency.
