Young is the incumbent, serving from 2014 to present. She was an environmental consultant. Her priorities are "Keep EBMUD water clean, safe, and affordable," "Lead on climate action and environmental stewardship," and "fight for equity in everything EBMUD does."
Gray worked at EBMUD for 30+ years and recently retired as Manager of Technical and Emerging Issues. He is a licensed Civil Engineer and Grade 5 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator in California. At EBMUD, he developed innovative wastewater treatment methods to meet new, more stringent regulations at reduced operational and capital cost. While Young has good "big picture" goals, I have found it is really helpful to have individuals with actual technical experience on boards. They have the ability to ask staff questions about proposals that generalists do not. Young also has had 12 years on the EBMUD Board. I like Gray's technical expertise and agree that it may be useful as EBMUD must meet future regulations on microplastics and PFAS. I will vote for Gray.
