Tensions are high in 2A03. Incumbent Patel’s reported conduct toward her 2A08 commissioner Jim Malec has been inappropriate at times. It does follow a long-running dispute, involving 2A commissioners and Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s office, regarding whether the Aston bridge housing facility should be allowed to offer to those experiencing homelessness its full number of beds. Currently, the Aston can only use 100 of its 190 beds. Patel has consistently pushed for the Aston to be able to employ its full capacity, which Pinto opposes and which Malec has said he feels requires additional public input.
This conflict has particular weight in Ward 2, the only ward in which the District did not build a new short-term family shelter following the 2016 closure of DC General. Though we appreciate her opponent George’s response to our questionnaire, we endorse Patel for her devotion to housing for those who need it most in a part of the city that has not done its fair share.
