Alan Buckalew enlisted in the Army at 17, months before 9/11, and did multiple combat tours in Afghanistan as a paratrooper. He earned a Valorous Unit Citation before being medically retired.

He came home, became a DSS caseworker and courtroom advocate for abused kids, graduated valedictorian along the way, and then, mid-grad-school, got hit with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare disorder that left him fully paralyzed for months. He fought his way back and now works as an in-home care aide for elderly and disabled clients.
