Rashida Tlaib is the eldest of 14 children. where she learned the importance of hard work, honesty and commitment to community. Being big sister to 13 siblings helped her develop leadership qualities that make her responsible, caring and compassionate, and her family’s struggle to create a new life in Detroit inspired Rashida’s long-term commitment to public service and giving back to the community, one she shares today with her two sons, Adam and Yousif. With the belief that history is everyone’s story, not just that of the wealthy and privileged, Rashida Tlaib dedicates her life to ensure that the voice and concern of every person is heard and addressed. With her commitment and uncompromising principle to advocate for social justice, despite the risks it poses, Rashida continues to rewrite and make history. Rashida is a longtime resident of Detroit and the child of Palestinian immigrants. Rashida served as a State Representative in the Michigan House of Representatives, where she served three terms. Rashida made history by becoming the first female Muslim elected to the Michigan Legislature and only second Muslim woman to serve in a state legislature in the country. Rashida received her Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1998 and Jurist Doctorate from Thomas Cooley Law School. In 2015, Rashida joined the Sugar Law Center for Economic & Social Justice, a national advocacy organization fighting for human rights on behalf of working families. Although all her advocacy work is significant, Rashida's most important accomplishment was establishing a neighborhood service center which provided more than twelve different programs to low-income families and those who need help the most. The neighborhood service center lives on as the Mary Turner Center for Advocacy and continues to serve thousands of the families she represented. Rashida has been the recipient of numerous awards, including being featured in PBS’ Makers Documentary on Women in Politics, Family Circle magazine’s 20 Most Influential Moms of 2016, and in New York Magazine’s list of Democratic leaders as the “next Obama.”
