When the gun lobby launched unmerited attacks on California’s strong gun laws, Attorney General Bonta stepped up and successfully defended them. He has also continued to elevate the critical role of frontline violence intervention workers in breaking cycles of violence, and he has proven time and again to be a champion for gun safety reforms that will make all Californians safer from gun violence.

Rob Bonta has been an effective Attorney General, and we're happy to endorse him for another term.
For San Francisco voters, Bonta's most important work has been on housing. He co-sponsored SB 1037 (https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-issues-legal-alert-legislation-authorizing-new-civil) with Scott Wiener, which gave the AG's office real teeth to fine cities that block housing — and he has used them. His office has forced compliance from cities (https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-newsom-administration-reach-settlement-city-norwalk-over) across California that were illegally stalling housing plans, including settlements with Fullerton, Norwalk, Elk Grove, and Huntington Beach. When the city of Woodside tried to claim it was a cougar habitat to dodge SB 9, Bonta shut it down. Every home that gets built because a NIMBY city was forced to follow the law makes San Francisco's regional housing market a little less insane.
He's also gone after anticompetitive behavior in the rental market. His office got a $7M settlement from Greystar (https://oag.ca.gov/news/press-releases/attorney-general-bonta-announces-7-million-settlement-greystar-participating), the nation's largest landlord, for using software to coordinate rent prices with competitors — basically a cartel run through an algorithm. That kind of enforcement matters to every renter in the Bay Area.
Bonta has also been active defending California against the Trump administration, filing over 50 lawsuits on issues from immigration to environmental protections.

Rob Bonta is the incumbent AG. He has brought and won significant cases against Trump administration to protect funds Congress allocated to California, maintain CA control of its National Guard, limit immigration enforcement abuse, maintain CA environmental regulations, etc. Defends CA gun regulation and prosecutes healthcare fraud, retail shoplifting gangs, fentanyl. He enforces CA’s housing laws, including those requiring localities to build new housing, and has brought major antitrust litigation to protect Californians (against Live Nation, Amazon, Meta, and now the Paramount – Warner Bros. merger). He protects reproductive rights.
Michael Gates: Republican. In 2025, the Trump administration appointed Gates Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. He touts his prosecutorial experience and says he would be tough on crime and fraud. He believes that California should “align with federal law,” and likely would drop lawsuits against Trump policies. He believes local governments should make land use decisions and would not enforce CA laws regarding housing mandates. He strongly supports the Second Amendment and would challenge CA and local laws restricting gun ownership. He opposes “sanctuary city laws, arguing for stronger enforcement of immigration rules and prioritizing community safety.” He wants to ‘restore election confidence” with voter ID laws. He will not commit to enforce state laws that protect doctors who provide abortion medication to women in states that have severely restricted access from prosecution in those states. Of course, the AG’s job is to defend and implement the Legislature’s laws, not the AG’s preferences. Claims he wants to fight fraud, but attacks funds spent on homelessness that have not worked and on CA High Speed Rail. Worth debating, but not the AG’s lane. Claims “When [police] are handcuffed by politicians, communities suffer,” and says under him “crime will be illegal again.” Wants to keep “boys out of girls' sports.”
Bonta has done a good job as AG—and part of that job is protecting California from Trump demands and actions that violate the law and would harm Californians. Despite Gates’ claims, there is no indication that Bonta has failed to investigate and prosecute violations of state criminal law (the existence of crime is not de facto evidence of a failure to prosecute it). While investigations have found fraud in CA government programs, Bonta has not ignored it. On the other hand, Gates appears unwilling to enforce California laws with which he disagrees, including housing mandates, gun regulation and on reproductive rights. While police generally deserve our support, Gates’ support for our “guardians of law and order” appears unconditional and he may be unwilling to prosecute police who break the law. My vote is for Rob Bonta.

Rob Bonta has done a great job as Attorney General, finally going after cities, working with the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) to force cities to approve plans for more homes and come into compliance with new state laws to encourage housing production authored by GOATed State Senator Scott Wiener. He will win reelection handily as the only Democrat running.

YIMBY Action endorses Rob Bonta for Attorney General because he has been one of the strongest enforcers of California's housing laws. In 2021 he created the Housing Strike Force, the first unit in the AG's office dedicated to holding cities accountable for breaking state housing law. Pro-housing laws only matter if someone enforces them, and Bonta has shown he will.
