Keep WA Courts Fair & Balanced
Recomienda a Scott Edwards
Scott Edwards is a pragmatic moderate focused on the rule of law, with decades of legal experience.
By contrast, Colleen Melody is a progressive activist who had zero experience as a judge until the Governor (under pressure from the far left) appointed her to the State Supreme Court.

In this election, 5 of the 9 positions are open. We need to maintain a court that reflects the values of WA residents and upholds the law! The GOP and groups like go WA are investing heavily to make this a MAGA court.

Justice Colleen Melody is perhaps most notable for building the Civil Rights Division of the Washington State Attorney General’s Office from the ground up, developing it into a nationally-recognized powerhouse that protects state residents from civil rights violations regardless of race, gender, age, or disability. She is a staunch advocate for the rule of law and all of our rights, and she is the voice that we need on the state Supreme Court as we navigate the foundational threats, challenges, and opportunities of the time we live in. We believe, from her record of advocacy and service, that Justice Melody will continue to protect Washingtonians’ interests, and for that reason she has earned AFT Washington’s endorsement for Position 1 on the State Supreme Court. Colleen Melody was appointed to the court last year and is running to keep her seat. Before this, she spent over a decade as the Chief of the Civil Rights Division in the Washington Attorney General's Office where she led major cases defending access to abortion medication, challenging the Muslim travel ban in Trump's first term, opposing family separation policies, and protecting LGBTQ+ rights. She's also served in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. She's endorsed by orgs like the Stranger, the Urbanist, Planned Parenthood, and the Washington State Labor Council.
Scott Edwards is career tax attorney who largely represented corporate and wealthy clients. He has worked often with prominent conservative figures in Washington such as Rob McKenna (currently leading the legal charge to repeal the Millionaires Tax) and the anti-union operation Freedom Foundation. He has a history of fighting against progressive tax policies, worker rights, and environment protections while advocating frequently to protect wealthy businesses and people from paying their fair share in taxes. If elected he would pretty clearly be in the pocket of corporate and wealthy interests.

Position 1. Scott Edwards is running against Justice Colleen Melody. Justice Melody was appointed by Gov. Ferguson. This is her first election. I value Scott Edwards's decades of experience in tax and constitutional law, particularly when the court faces fundamental questions about the limits of the state's taxing power.

Washington State has several State Supreme Court races this year, which is the body that interprets the state constitution and laws. The next State Supreme Court will likely take up the issue of the Millionaire’s Tax and immigrant rights, among other critical issues, which is why the mega-wealthy are running their own WA Supreme Court candidates to overturn progressive victories. Our endorsements represent a slate of candidates that have experience defending working people, immigrants, reproductive and gender affirming care, and are committed to expanding access to justice. This August, vote: Colleen Melody (Position 1), Jaime Hawk (Position 3), Theo Angelis (Position 5), and Debra Stephens (Position 7) to defend and expand our rights in these areas!

Justice Colleen Melody is running for state Supreme Court Position 1. She was appointed to the state Supreme Court by Governor Bob Ferguson in 2025. Before joining the court, she served for 11 years as Chief of the Civil Rights Division in the Washington Attorney General's Office, where she helped lead major cases defending access to abortion medication, challenging the Muslim travel ban in Trump's first term, opposing family separation policies, and protecting LGBTQ+ rights. She previously served in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, bringing decades of constitutional and public interest legal experience to the bench. The Washington Supreme Court plays a critical role in protecting the rights and freedoms of people in our state, from safeguarding reproductive freedom and civil rights to defending working people, protecting the environment, and upholding fair tax laws. With so much at stake, Washington needs justices with a strong commitment to defending our freedoms, which is why we recommend Colleen Melody for Washington state Supreme Court Position 1.
