In this election, 5 of the 9 positions are open. We need to maintain a court that reflects the values of WA residents and upholds the law! The GOP and groups like go WA are investing heavily to make this a MAGA court.

Currently serving on a Washington Superior Court, Justice Hawk is running for Position 3 on the State Supreme Court. She is the first person who served as an ACLU attorney to become a judge in Washington, and has a very strong history as counsel of record in appellate briefings before the State Supreme Court. Among her notable work as an attorney, she has defended voting rights and people facing ICE deportation. One of her goals is court reform – she serves on a Supreme Court Commission with the goal of making the justice system more accessible to all Washingtonians by eliminating bias and making the courts more accessible to working families. Her range of experience and her professional goals make her the easy choice for Washington State Supreme Court Position 2, and AFT Washington is pleased to endorse her. Jamie Hawk is a career public defender who has also done work serving as a federal defender in Eastern Washington and leading statewide advocacy efforts as an attorney for the ACLU of Washington. She has experience as a Superior Court Judge and serves on the Washington Supreme Court's Minority and Justice Commission. She is endorsed by orgs like the Washington State Labor Council, the Urbanist, and Planned Parenthood.
David Stevens is a current judge who has previously run for political office as a Republican and served as Vice Chair of the Spokane County Republican Party. He has expressed extremely right-wing views in his campaigns including advocating for the “sanctity of life” from conception onward, insisted marriage is between one man and one woman, expressed support for abolishing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), and advocated for the United States to withdraw from the United Nations. He would be a danger to the civil liberties and safety of many Washingtonians if elected.

Position 3. Open seat. Judge David Stevens of the Mason County Superior Court is running against Judge Jaime Hawk of the King County Superior Court. I support Judge Stevens's emphasis on judicial restraint and his view that changes to our constitution belong in the amendment process.

Washington State has several State Supreme Court races this year, which is the body that interprets the state constitution and laws. The next State Supreme Court will likely take up the issue of the Millionaire’s Tax and immigrant rights, among other critical issues, which is why the mega-wealthy are running their own WA Supreme Court candidates to overturn progressive victories. Our endorsements represent a slate of candidates that have experience defending working people, immigrants, reproductive and gender affirming care, and are committed to expanding access to justice. This August, vote: Colleen Melody (Position 1), Jaime Hawk (Position 3), Theo Angelis (Position 5), and Debra Stephens (Position 7) to defend and expand our rights in these areas!

Judge Jaime Hawk is running for Washington State Supreme Court Position 3. She has served on the King County Superior Court since 2019, after more than two decades as a public defender, during which she represented thousands of people and advocated for the constitutional rights of individuals who otherwise could not afford legal representation. Her career has also included serving as a federal defender in Eastern Washington and leading statewide advocacy efforts as an attorney for the ACLU of Washington, where she worked to protect civil liberties, constitutional rights, and equal justice under the law. As a Superior Court judge, Hawk has presided over criminal, civil, and family law cases with fairness, independence, and respect for every person who enters the courtroom. She also serves on the Washington Supreme Court's Minority and Justice Commission, where she works to strengthen public trust in the courts and expand access to justice. At a time when our fundamental freedoms are under threat from the federal government, Judge Hawk has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to ensuring our legal system serves everyone, not just the powerful and wealthy. Her experience serving communities across Washington and her lifelong dedication to fairness, equal justice, and the rule of law make her well qualified to serve on our state's highest court. Due to her commitment to equitable justice and her judicial experience, we recommend Jaime Hawk for Washington Supreme Court Position 3.
