Iowa General Election
U.S. Senate - Iowa

City roads aren't safe for bikers; many will flaunt traffic rules, some b/c they feel they have to. Most countries do it better than the U.S.
We support candidates up and (especially) down the ballot standing for mobility policies that make city life worth the stress.

Measure G: Allowing Private Vehicles on the Great Highway in Sunset Dunes Park
I admit I'm biased; I love the Great Highway. I love that pedestrians and cyclists get to enjoy it without worrying about being run over by a car. I love the playgrounds along Sunset Dunes, like Shipwreck Cove.
Proponents of this measure are co-opting the principle of street safety, advocating that it will ease traffic by increasing the supply of roads, and thus make our streets safer.
There are many reasons this argument is incomplete. But as someone who has biked around the city plenty, including alongside drivers, I now expect they are frustrated, impatient, and sloppy, regardless if one extra street exists for them or not.
More important to me is that there is some protected space where the inevitable frustration, impatience, and sloppiness has no way of affecting everyone else with somewhere to go. That's the promise of the Great Highway and other car free zones like JFK.
And this isn't just a promise—it's backed by cold hard evidence. Injurious traffic crashes have decreased since the road was limited to pedestrians/cyclists.
Yes, I'm biased, but this one's pretty clear for me. Vote no.
