This is the district once represented by the late Congressman Alcee Hastings. Its modern roots trace to 1992 redistricting that expanded Black representation in Congress, with Hastings becoming one of Florida’s first Black members of Congress since Reconstruction. In May 2026, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a new congressional map that significantly redrew the historically Black District 20. Four Black Democrats later ran for the seat, but all four lost, including Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell.

Florida’s governor’s race features two candidates who switched political parties. Republican Byron Donalds, a Black Jamaican American and former Democrat, is a prominent Trump ally campaigning on lower insurance and housing costs, school choice and tougher immigration enforcement. Democrat David Jolly is a former Republican congressman campaigning on a state-backed catastrophic insurance fund, increased public-school funding, Medicaid expansion and abortion rights. If elected, Donalds would become Florida’s first Black governor.

Uthmeier has made combating online child exploitation a major priority and has taken an expansive approach to Second Amendment protections. Rodríguez emphasizes consumer protection, insurance and utility costs, gun violence, government corruption and an attorney general’s independence from partisan interests.
