It is not an exaggeration to say that Lori Brooke has been working tirelessly on behalf of District 2 residents for 20-plus years. Her passion for helping San Franciscans is strong, and her connections with the community are deep. She is running as the neighborhood grassroots challenger, and her pitch is that District 2 needs an independent representative rooted in the district rather than another City Hall insider. Her north star is neighborhood quality of life, and she has consistently framed safe and clean streets as the foundation for everything else.
Lori strongly opposed Mayor Lurie’s Family Zoning Plan, which was approved by the Board of Supervisors (https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/urban-development/sf-family-zoning-plan-passes-upzoning-approved/article_3938b98d-df49-401f-b857-18e03c72c848.html) last December, though she doesn’t oppose building housing overall. Instead, she prioritizes neighborhood character and local control, favors building approved projects already in the pipeline and focuses on affordable housing. Lori strongly opposes the new Marina Safeway highrise project and broader upzoning tied to state mandates.
She is endorsed by respected moderates, like Michaela Alioto-Pier, as well as by the League of Pissed-Off Voters and the Working Families Party, universally known as a progressive, union-backed political party. Because Lori hasn’t held elected office, it’s an open question on how her progressive leanings on certain issues, not to mention her relationships with progressive leaders and groups, will factor into her decision-making if she is elected supervisor.

This is one of the most conservative districts in San Francisco, electing supervisors like Gavin Newsom and Catherine Stefani, who both moved on to higher office. The incumbent, Stephen Sherrill, was appointed by former Mayor London Breed after Stefani moved to the state Assembly. He had no credible local political experience at the time, but was close to Michael Bloomberg, who was also close to Breed. He has been a terrible supervisor, holding down the right flank of the board while whining about development at the Marina Safeway, which is possible only because the Breed-Sherrill ally, state Sen. Scott Wiener, undercut local land use controls.
We will be honest and direct: District Two is not going to elect a progressive supervisor. But Lori Brooke is the best we will likely get.
Brooke is never going to vote with progressives on cuts to the police budget, or on most tax measures. But unlike Sherrill, she is a legitimate, longtime neighborhood activist and leader who opposed the mayor’s Rich Family Zoning Plan. We’re supporting her.

Lori Brooke has shown her commitment to tenants rights as cited by her concerns for the loss of rent-controlled housing as one of the reasons for her opposition to the Family Zoning Plan and in that, she’s fully aligned with SFTU’s goals and objectives.

Lori has lived in the district for 30 years, with 19 of those spent as the President of the Cow Hollow Association, which has provided her with hands-on knowledge of the needs of her constituents. She would like to see the return of City College programs to her district.
All three of these candidates are concerned about affordable housing, especially the needs of educators to live and work in their communities. Approximately half of the faculty at City College live outside of San Francisco. The prevailing narrative in San Francisco is that by building as much housing as we can the market will simply regulate itself and make housing affordable for everyone. Unregulated growth without a focus on affordable housing only helps the speculators. See the Vancouver model. (https://48hills.org/2024/09/vancouver-study-shows-how-the-yimby-narrative-has-failed-in-real-time/) Our candidates are all focused on creating more housing for working class families and fostering communities of inclusion and equity.

Lori Brooke - I want to see a more progressive rep for this seat, especially considering how Sherrill has fallen in line with Lurie's agenda.

Does it really matter which rich white homeowner represents District 2 (the Marina and Pac Heights) at the Board of Supervisors? Yes, actually – the balance of power at the Board rests on the outcome of this election. Interim Supervisor Stephen Sherrill is so terrible at his job that he could easily lose in June. Sherrill’s loss would change the Board math for countering the Mayor’s defunding of city government in the name of downtown revitalization, so progressives can’t ignore this race.
Supervisor Sherrill was appointed by Mayor London Breed last year as a payback for his mentor Michael Bloomberg's massive campaign contributions to her. His dad is a Republican mega-donor, and Sherill himself is a former Republican who interned in the Bush White House (https://www.sfexaminer.com/news/politics/new-sf-supervisor-stephen-sherrill-is-out-to-prove-himself/article_caea0698-be6f-11ef-bc4a-b7ab8daf4835.html). District 2 voters feel that their supervisor is not representing his constituents as much as he is rubber-stamping the Mayor's policies. His support for Lurie's “Family Zoning” housing developer giveaway is best symbolized by the proposed demolition of the beloved Marina Safeway in order to erect 25 stories of luxury waterfront pied-à-terres. District 2 voters are pissed off: they never voted for Sherrill in the first place, and seem ready for a change.
Lori Brooke is the viable, independent challenger who could break the Mayor's green-light majority on the Board. She has deep roots in the district, and has been a leader in the Cow Hollow Neighborhood Association for decades. As a housing activist, Lori has been rallying her neighbors to challenge Lurie on his bad decisions that put downtown real estate interests above neighborhood residents and small businesses. Lori's call for community-driven housing policy suggests a vision we can get behind: neighborhoods that build communities instead of more luxury condominiums.
Just as with our strategic endorsement for Governor, we're holding our breath and trusting in a rich white person to stay independent and to vote with us some of the time, with some prior assurance of common goals. To be clear, while Lori has supported progressive candidates like Aaron Peskin and Jane Kim in the past, she is not a progressive. She’s representing one of the most conservative neighborhoods in the city, so the best we can hope for is an independent Democrat. We won’t agree with Lori on every vote, but electing a non-lapdog D2 supervisor grounded in her neighborhood is crucial for blocking Mayor Lurie's charter reform power grab in November and bringing the voices of neighborhoods back into City Hall ASAP.
Vote Lori Brooke for District 2 Supervisor!
