Weber County Attorney

Chris Allred is running unopposed for Weber County Attorney.

Think about that for a minute. The county attorney is responsible for prosecuting violations of state criminal law and county ordinances. His office also provides legal counsel to the very county government that approves permits and oversees facilities operating in our communities.

And we’re going to let him walk into another four-year term without so much as a job interview?

I have serious questions about facilities operating in Weber County that have received government approvals and subsequently faced allegations of human rights violations.

What complaints have been investigated? What violations have been referred for prosecution? What has the county attorney’s office done to protect the people affected? And when jurisdiction belongs to another agency, what steps has his office taken to ensure those concerns are addressed?

Those are questions the public deserves answers to. Not finger-pointing. Not passing the buck. Actual answers.

The county attorney’s job is to uphold the law, not simply represent the interests of county government. That responsibility includes protecting the rights of the people who live here.

Nobody holding that much authority should be exempt from public scrutiny simply because they’re running unopposed.
