It’s unacceptable that the office of Weber County Sheriff can go without a Democratic challenger, particularly when there are serious questions about the department’s involvement in federal immigration enforcement.
Sheriff Ryan Arbon entered into a 287(g) agreement with ICE, giving local deputies federal immigration enforcement authority. That decision deserves public scrutiny.
Our sheriff takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. That includes due process, protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, and the rights of every person in our community.
We deserve answers about how this agreement is being implemented, who is being detained, what safeguards exist against abuse, and how residents can hold the department accountable.
An elected sheriff should have to answer those questions publicly, defend those decisions, and face meaningful scrutiny at election time. Nobody should get a free pass simply because nobody else is on the ballot.
