Luckily, there is another choice: Oliver Ma. Oliver is CA DSA’s first-ever endorsed statewide candidate and is running on an explicitly democratic socialist platform that articulates a vision of a California that works for working people—not oligarchs and billionaires.

Oliver immigrated to California at age seven and has dedicated his career as a lawyer to protecting the rights of tenants, immigrants, and workers. As an immigrant rights attorney with the ACLU, Oliver has been on the front lines of defending Californians against ICE and the federal government’s terror campaign. When elected, he will shut down the for-profit detention centers that have proliferated across our state, ending the profits made from our exploitation.

One of the primary areas of influence of the Lieutenant Governor is over California’s higher education system. Currently, University of California schools alone have over $32 billion invested in assets tied to genocide and apartheid in Palestine. Not only is Oliver the only candidate to describe the atrocities in Gaza as genocide, he is the only candidate who has promised to divest these funds from Israel and ensure that our higher education institutions are not funding atrocities overseas.

Oliver is committed to building something that lasts beyond his campaign and, in this, building DSA statewide. If you haven’t heard of Oliver Ma, that’s because he hasn’t run for office before—he was too busy. And if you have heard of him, that’s probably because you’re a rapid responder dealing with ICE raids in Kern County, or a tenant facing eviction in Boston, or an immigrant farmworker in detention, or any other frontline activist, and you’ve needed his help. 

Oliver has been on the ground for years as a civil rights lawyer, a tenant organizer, and an activist defending rural Californian immigrants and workers, most recently as a lawyer for the ACLU.  He’s an immigrant himself, a graduate of UC Berkeley and Harvard Law. As Lieutenant Governor, Oliver would work to divest the UC college system from apartheid. 

Another great candidate in this race is former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, who shares our progressive values. The rest of the candidates aren’t so great. We’re backing Oliver because he’s endorsed by the California Democratic Socialists of America, and we’re excited to see DSA start running more and more candidates for office. They move the needle of what’s possible in California, so we’re all in on Oliver.

Oliver Ma will most likely be my top choice. If you like Bernie Sanders and Zohran Mamdani, he will probably be your best choice. His campaign shows him as a Democratic socialist. He wants free public college tuition (if European countries can do it, why can't we?), and he protects immigrant families. He's a civil rights attorney who has fought against ICE. He also wants to ban corporate landlords from buying single family houses, and protect public lands from fossil fuel companies. Alice Stek is a close second of mine, she also wants free public college tuition for households that make <$250,000, she is part of the PAF party, just like Ramsey Robinson and has democratic socialist views.
