Kate Compton Barr is a trailblazing advocate for democracy who made waves as the first candidate to run a “Can’t Win” campaign for North Carolina Senate District 37, shining a spotlight on the harmful effects of gerrymandering. By embracing her uphill battle with humor and determination, Kate mobili...
Gerrymandering rigs the system before you even cast your ballot. When politicians draw district lines to pick their voters instead of voters picking their politicians, we end up with a fake democracy where 81% of state legislative races are uncontested or uncompetitive. That means your voice doesn't matter, your vote feels meaningless, and elected leaders answer to map-makers instead of you. Communities get ignored. Extreme laws pass that don't reflect what people actually want. And the worst part? It makes people so disillusioned that they stop showing up—which is exactly what the map-makers want.
This isn't a partisan problem, it's a democracy problem. Both parties gerrymander (and both are wrong), but the scale is staggering: gerrymandering determines control of the entire US House of Representatives and 13 state legislatures. When 23 extra Republican seats and 7 extra Democratic seats are won purely because of how lines are drawn—not because of what voters want—we don't have competitive elections that hold leaders accountable. We have a rigged game that leaves communities voiceless and voters feeling like their participation doesn't matter. That's not democracy. That's some real bullsh*t.
No ads, no data selling, no political agenda.
Every voter is checked against official state rolls.
Your vote joins thousands of others. That's what moves elections.
