I spent 20 years in prison. Twenty years of watching the world move without me, twenty years of dreaming about what I’d do if I ever got another chance. When I came home, I made a promise to myself that I’d use everything I learned inside to inspire people outside.
I know what it feels like to be counted out. I know what it’s like to come home and have doors shut in your face just because of your past. That’s why I care so much about people coming home from prison, the returning citizens who are trying to rebuild their lives, find work, take care of their families, and be part of their communities again.
To me, this isn’t just about second chances. It’s about ownership, owning your story, owning your growth, and owning your voice. Everybody deserves the chance to be seen as more than their mistakes. That’s why I’m all in on helping returning citizens get access to real opportunities and understand the power they have, especially when it comes to voting and shaping the future of their communities.
I came home and turned pain into purpose. If I can do that, anybody can.
For many black men, the barbershop is the only place to really talk. It’s like therapy without the label. That’s why I want to help turn barbershops into safe spaces for mental health and healing. Too many brothers fight silent battles. We need more support in our neighborhoods where men can open up and get help without judgment. The barbershop is where conversations start — now it’s time to make sure they lead to healing
