We oppose human trafficking. Human traffickers should be punished. Proposition 133 seeks to increase punishment without protecting victims or allowing judges to consider the situation and role of defendants. We recommend voting NO on this proposition. - Prop 133 does not protect human trafficking victims from being charged with crimes. - Prop 133 extends the mandatory sentences but does not provide money for prisons. - Prop 133 ignores existing laws that provide protections for minor victims and laws that allow judges to consider circumstances when sentencing. Our children will be safer if we put our resources into preventing the trafficking of minors rather than paying for more prisons.

This one seemed like an automatic yes until I read more into it. Changes the offense from a class 2 to class 1 felony and removes sentencing discretion. Applies to buyers and sellers. Minors cannot legally consent to commercial sexual activity. Existing law provides defenses/protections for charged people who are themselves trafficking victims. Mandatory life sentences may deter victims coerced into crimes from reporting or cooperating, eliminate consideration of case circumstances, and shift funds away from prevention without stopping trafficking. I would rather our state put more resources behind stopping trafficking than automatically punishing trafficking victims. The current law allows for sentencing discretion, meaning the judge could sentence offenders to life.

Proposition 133 would increase the penalty for human trafficking of a minor for sexual servitude to life imprisonment without parole. The current sentencing range is substantially lower.
Why Vote YES?
Children are not commodities.
Anyone who knowingly traffics a child for sexual servitude commits an exceptionally serious crime that destroys lives and families.
Colorado's criminal justice system should send an unmistakable message that exploiting children for sexual purposes will result in the strongest available punishment.
The priority should be protecting victims and permanently incapacitating predators who commit the most horrific offenses against children.
Position: Protect children and impose severe penalties on those who traffic them for sexual exploitation. Vote YES.
