Annette Blackwell, the first woman and first African American elected mayor of Maple Heights, knows how to fix broken finances. Taking office shortly after the state placed her city in fiscal emergency, Blackwell dug into the books herself, wrote the recovery plan, and led a turnaround that earned Maple Heights the State Auditor’s Clean Audit Award year after year. Before entering public service, she built deep financial expertise in the private sector at KeyBank, University Hospitals, Deloitte, and Ryan LLC.
As Auditor of State, Blackwell will be a watchdog for taxpayers — including real accountability for the hundreds of millions of public dollars flowing to private schools and charter operators with little oversight. She faces current Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) in November.
