Judge Walton was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1997. She briefly had her own practice before joining the Office of the Cook County Public Defender, where she was assigned to the Markham courthouse as a trial attorney. Since her appointment to the circuit court in 2019, she served in the First Municipal District, and the Maywood Courthouse. She was elected in 2020 and presently hears felony cases at both bench and jury trials at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Judge Walton has been active as a speaker for both legal (AOIC) and community (local churches and Kennedy-King College) events. She is an officer of the Illinois Judicial Council. She has also been active with the local branch of the NAACP. References uniformly praised her Legal knowledge, temperament, character, and professionalism. ISBA recommends Judge Tyria B. Walton be retained to the Circuit Court of Cook County.
