Judge Watkins was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1991. He was appointed to the circuit court in May 2014; elected in November 2014 and retained in 2020. He is currently assigned as a supervising judge in the Criminal Division at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.
Judge Watkins was universally praised for his legal knowledge, diligence, professionalism and temperament. He treats everyone appearing before him with respect and is fair to both sides. He is noted as being prepared, punctual, and ‘a student of the law’. ISBA recommends Judge Steven G. Watkins be retained to the Circuit Court of Cook County.
